Cineworld staves off administration

 

Cineworld has confirmed five of its sites are to close - and one has been saved - after it staved off the threat of administration in a High Court appearance.

This morning, a judge approved restructuring plans for four of its companies - Cine-UK Ltd, Cineworld Cinemas Ltd, Cineworld Cinema Properties Ltd and Cineworld Estates Ltd - which make up the firm. The approval means that £16million of fresh equity from their indirect parent company will be injected to meet immediate financial needs, with an additional potential £35million in the pipeline.

However, despite the last minute reprieve, five of its cinemas are set to close. Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon Regent Circus will all still close for good. The timeline for the closures are currently unknown. However, Cineworld Hinckley - which had previously been earmarked for closure - will now remain open.

Actors ratify strike peace deal

The new “peace” contract with the US film producers’ body AMFTP following the long Hollywood strike has been officially ratified by the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA, with the following key details: A 78% majority voted in favour. The voter turnout was 38%. The agreement is valid until June 2026. Fran Drescher, the president of the union, said: "This agreement stands as a significant triumph for working performers, signifying the beginning of a new era in the industry. Achieving this milestone was undeniably a collective endeavour." The AMFTP added, "With this decisive vote, the industry and the jobs it sustains are poised to make a full-fledged return."

Geldof hints at Live Aid in Imax

Bob Geldof has hinted at the possibility of an Imax film showcasing Live Aid, the monumental 1985 worldwide charity concert that he orchestrated, making its way to cinemas. Geldof didn't hold back when expressing his disdain for the 1982 musical film Pink Floyd-The Wall , a sentiment he openly shared while introducing a screening of the film at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival in Toruń, Poland, alongside his friend, cinematographer, and Lifetime Achievement Award honouree Peter Biziou. He candidly admitted, "I don’t like the film. I think I’m really bad. I’m not an actor, and I think it’s like an extended video."
